Are you salt aware?

Foods to Avoid That Are Full of Salt

Salt is an essential nutrient that the human body needs to function properly. However, many people consume much more than the recommended amount of sodium per day. Excess sodium consumption can lead to many unwanted health issues. These can include heart failure, kidney problems, stroke, and osteoporosis. Excess salt in the body is also the cause of more than 30 percent of cases of high blood pressure, or hypertension.

There are many foods that contain large amounts of sodium. Foods that have over 900 milligrams of sodium per serving are thought to have high sodium content. Most foods from fast food restaurants have high levels of sodium, especially pizza and French fries. Packaged snack foods, such as potato chips and pretzels, also contain lots of sodium. Other foods that are known for their high levels of sodium include processed meats, bread, breakfast cereal, salted butter, and canned vegetables. Canned soups have a very high sodium content due to the preservation of the meat and vegetables included in the soup. It has been shown that those who regularly eat canned soup are at increased risk for stomach cancer.

Many people are not aware that they are consuming more than the recommended amount of sodium. Many experts agree that if you are eating fast food even once a week, you are getting more than three times the amount of salt you need for a seven day period.

There are many ways that people can lower their daily sodium intake. These things are easy to do and require only a few additional minutes of time to complete. Research has shown that those who reduce their daily salt consumption only by one gram are greatly decreasing their risk of many harmful medical issues, and even help them to live a longer life. One way to reduce salt intake is to eat fresh fruits and vegetables instead of processed snacks and potato chips. Canned vegetables should be rinsed to remove the added salt, and the salt shaker should not be kept on the dining room table. While cooking, spices and herbs can be added to food to give it additional flavor instead of salt. Fresh meat should be used whenever possible, as it has a much lower sodium content than canned and processed varieties. Many food items also come in a low sodium option, making it much easier to reduce salt intake without sacrificing flavor or variety.
